As someone who lives and breathes lingerie during my work time, I sometimes have to make an active effort to stop thinking about it during my off hours. Sometimes I’m more successful than others. The exception is when a new lingerie book comes out or I get a recommendation for one that involves lingerie and fashion. I’ve read a huge list of books that involve lingerie and fashion over the past few years, so today I thought I’d share a few of my favorites. If you run out of reading this summer and want to learn more about your lingerie (or just be entertained by something lingerie themed) then something on this list is probably for you.

These books include everything from a serious textbook to a cozy mystery so you can pick and choose your time and investment level! What they all have in common is that they are good, entertaining and worth taking the time to read.

1.  An Intimate Affair: Women, Lingerie, and Sexuality by Jill Fields

If you read one book about lingerie history it should be this one. It’s comprehensive, huge, and covers lingerie history starting back in the Middle Ages. Lingerie trends have always been about a battle between women and society’s expectations of them, with a big sprinkle of advertising and commercial influence on the side.

Lingerie options changed drastically over time as women demanded access to a wider range of activities. You’ll see how lingerie was used to hold women back, to further their ability to participate in society and to create a picture-perfect version of women and their lives. If you consider yourself a lingerie collector at all, then you should read this book to understand why we’re all consistently drawn to it over time.

2.  Paris Undressed: The Secrets of French Lingerie by Kathryn Kemp Griffin

This book has a breezy tone and combines lingerie history with modern day French inspired shopping tips. It’s more useful if you’re smaller busted and not especially curvy. That said, I enjoyed it as a plus-size woman for its deep dive into aspects of the industry like lace.

I’m not a huge fan of the ‘French women are effortlessly perfect’ genre of non-fiction books as a rule, but this book has a purpose beyond that and is genuinely entertaining. If you can’t go lingerie shopping in Paris then this book is the next best thing.

3.  Vintage Lingerie: Historical Patterns and Techniques by Jill Salen

The popularity of sewing has exploded recently! This book focuses on historic lingerie patterns and techniques. It’s an invaluable resource for people into costuming or anyone focused on the technical details of lingerie who wants to learn more.

This book not only offers annotated historical patterns for personal use but also talks about ways to alter them to suit various body shapes! The patterns go back to the 1890s with a focus on corsetry and goes up to the 1950s. It’s a great resource for fans of vintage and retro lingerie from all time periods.

4.  Murder Unmentionable by Meg London

Now we get to one of my favorite literary genres: the cozy murder mystery! I read a ton of these in my free time so I was thrilled to find a series that involved a lingerie shop. It’s set in Paris, Tennessee and involves a fun cast of characters and a satisfying amount of romance. If you like this one there are two more in the series for you to enjoy!

This would make a great lingerie related beach read this summer. It’s the perfect brainless vacation novel.

5.  The Breast Life Guide to The Bra Zone: How to Find Your Size, Style, and Support by Elisabeth Dale

I have to admit my bias here: Elisabeth is one of my editors and also a fabulous human being. That said, her book would be on this list even if I didn’t send her emails every week! If you’re still looking for your perfect bra or bra brand to be loyal to then this is your book.

What I love about this book is that it focuses on finding a bra that feels right to you rather than on the lingerie “rules” that so many books emphasize. It talks about sister sizing and finding your personal fit, but also doesn’t pressure you to adopt some idea of what you should wear based on your age or size. I think of Elisabeth as a rule breaker, so it’s fitting that she’s written a book that encourages others to do the same.

Menopause is a period of significant hormonal changes that can last for years, and cause everything from excess sweating to swollen, sensitive nipples. It’s no wonder they call it the second puberty! Although it’s a completely natural part of aging, it definitely has the potential to leave you feeling pretty miserable.

The most well-known symptom of menopause has got to be hot flashes, a sudden feeling of heat that can be accompanied by sweating, which some people experience multiple times per day (and night!).

However, your breasts also undergo some significant changes that can cause issues of their own.

Breast changes during menopause

During perimenopause (the period shortly before the actual menopause) estrogen levels can spike, just like they do in pregnancy. And that can lead to breast swelling and tenderness.

Later, your estrogen production drops off. Since estrogen plays a role in keeping your skin supple, this can cause the skin on and around your breasts, plus the connective tissue inside them, to become less elastic. At the same time, your glandular tissues which were there to produce milk begin to shrink, making your breasts feel less firm. It’s the combination of these two factors that causes sagging.

But that’s not all. Your cup size may increase with menopause. In many cases, that’s down to general weight gain caused by a gradually slowing metabolism. So before you buy any new ideas, it’s a good idea to book a bra fitting to confirm the size you need – one which may change multiple times before it’s over.

Bra and lingerie tips for menopause

Because your breasts are one of the places where the signs of menopause can be seen and felt the most, changing up your lingerie can really help to alleviate some of that discomfort. Now full disclosure, I haven’t gone through menopause myself yet. But based on the symptoms above, it’s clear to me that you should be prioritizing two things – comfort, and breathability.

Here’s how to get them:

Soft, seamless fabrics

If your breasts are feeling sore or tender, pay special attention to the fabrics your bras are made from. Aim to buy lingerie in store if possible, so you can feel the garment in your hand see just how soft, or not, it is.

Cheaper laces and embroideries can potentially feel scratchy, especially if left unlined, so you may prefer to get your dose of chic design from a print instead. And it may also make sense to avoid seamed cups, since those seams can irritate sensitive skin.

Breathable fibers

Whether it’s a bra, a brief, or a set of PJs, the key to staying cool during hot flushes and night sweats is fabric that lets your skin breathe. Breathable underwear is also crucial to keep yeast infections at bay, something that menopause-related vaginal dryness puts you at a higher risk of.

Look for natural fibers such as silk, bamboo, linen and cotton, and avoid polyester, a common man-made one that traps moisture against your skin. Synthetic fabrics described as ‘moisture wicking’ are okay though, since these are technical fabrics woven in such a way that they encourage moisture to evaporate away. Side note: a silk nightie won’t do you much good if you’re sleeping in polyester bedding, so check that too!

Unlined bras

You may also find that thick, molded foam cups cause you to overheat and lead to a bad case of ‘boob sweat’. If that’s so, swap your padded and t-shirt bras for unlined ones. They’re more lightweight and breathable, and yet you may be surprised to know that this style can be equally supportive!

Wire-free bras

Suffering from breast tenderness? A well-fitting bra with underwires shouldn’t feel uncomfortable, so definitely book that bra fitting to check you’re not simply wearing wires that are too long or short for you.

However, there is, of course, the option of going wireless. Whether you choose a soft and stretchy bralette or a wire-free bra with a little more structure to it, many people find these to be the most comfortable choice on days when their breasts are feeling particularly delicate.

Then, look for recipes that incorporate them, like an arugula salad with tomatoes and basil vinaigrette, or a blackberry crisp.

Treating your body to farm-fresh produce when it’s at its peak is a phenomenal (and delicious) way to practice self-care. Not only will these fruits and veggies taste better when they’re in season, but they’ll also be cheaper, and pack even more nutrients, too.

4.  Take your workout outside

Stuck in an exercise rut? A great way to bust out of the boredom that comes with running on a treadmill is to take your workout to the great outdoors. At its best, planning a lingerie shower is incredibly fun. After all, it’s an honor to have the opportunity to celebrate the bride and shower them with a plethora of pretty new underpinnings.

At its worst, though, planning a lingerie shower can be a tad stressful. Where should you throw it? What information do you need to include on the invitations? How many activities do you need to plan? These are just a few of the questions that may arise while you’re putting the shower together.

But don’t fret — this checklist of do’s and don’ts should help you to plan the perfect shower (without all the hassles and headaches).

Do’s

Do send out the invitations at least a month in advance.

It’s important to give guests plenty of time to check their calendars, request off work if need be, and make travel plans. So be sure to send out the invitations between four and eight weeks before the actual event. Also, include an RSVP date on the invite so that you can get an accurate headcount ASAP.

Do include the bride’s sizes in the invitation.

Aside from the obvious details (date, time, location), the most important thing to include on the invitations are the bride’s sizes. Make sure you have their sizes for not only bras (both band and cup), but also panties and sleepwear/loungewear (S, M, L, etc.). Rather than including this info directly on the invitation, print it onto a separate insert that you can slip inside. If you provide guests with the bride’s sizes, the bride is less likely to have to return items because they don’t fit.

Do give guests a little guidance.

If the bride is very particular about her lingerie, they might want to compile a registry. That way, invitees can shop directly from the wishlist. If the bride does create a lingerie registry, you’ll obviously want to include a link to it on the invitation. This helps to not only guide guests in their purchasing decisions but also lessens the risk that two people accidentally buy the same item. If the bride doesn’t want to open a registry, you can still help point guests in the right direction by offering up the names of a few of their favorite stores, and you can include these suggestions on the invitation. Or, you might include a few descriptors for guests to stick to when shopping. For example, adding a theme on the invitation like “hot honeymoon” or “classy date night” might be helpful for attendees.

Do make sure the location offers privacy.

Most lingerie showers tend to be hosted in someone’s home (such as the bride’s, the maid of honor’s, or another friend’s). That said, you can definitely throw a lingerie shower in another location. However, the most important factor to consider is privacy. The bride will be opening up underthings, after all, and may not feel comfortable doing that in certain public places. You can certainly rent out a private room at a restaurant, but remember that wait staff will still be coming in and out of the room to refill drinks, etc. One alternative option is to have it at a lingerie boutique. Some independent shops will allow you to reserve the store for a block of time, and turn the shower into a shopping party. Or, if you’re planning a very intimate lingerie shower with a small group of ladies, you might rent out an elegant hotel room.

Do consider a goody bag or giveaway.

It’s definitely not required — but putting together a goody bag or giveaway is a fun way to thank guests for coming. If you go the goody bag route, consider a satchel with one pair of panties, a scented sachet for their lingerie drawer, chocolates, and a mini bottle of bubbly. Or, if you’re doing a giveaway, you might have guests guess how many pairs of panties are in a vase or a jar, and the one who’s guess is the closest gets a robe, PJ set, or a gift card to a lingerie store.

Dont’s

Don’t invite everyone.

Compiling the guest list is a very different task for a lingerie shower than it is for a traditional shower. Think about it this way: The bride is going to be unwrapping some sexy unmentionables, and they may not want to do that in front of their mother-in-law or grandma. Remember: If they’re having two showers, they definitely don’t have to invite everyone to both. So ask the bride who they’re comfortable with attending before sending out the invites. The lingerie shower tends to be a smaller, more intimate affair, and can even be combined with the bachelorette party if desired.

Don’t let guests think they have to buy gifts for both showers.

Very often, if a bride is having two showers, the guest list will look quite different for each. However, if there is some overlap in terms of who’s invited, make sure that guests know they’re not obligated to buy multiple gifts. Guests who are invited to both a traditional shower and lingerie shower should know that they can choose which one they bring a gift to.

Don’t forget to plan some games just in case.

Even if you don’t think you’ll need them, it’s a great idea to have a few games or activities on deck just in case. This is especially true if some or many of the attendees don’t know each other, as games can act as spectacular ice breakers. Whether it’s lingerie bingo, pin the panty on the bride, or a lingerie-themed cookie decorating station, the possibilities are endless. One particularly popular activity is to have guests anonymously give the bride their gifts, and then the bride has to guess who brought what.
